Successful "Open IT" Initiative to Convert to Open Source Applications continues

TEL AVIV, January 16, 2019 — MTN Cyprus, one of the largest telecommunications providers in Cyprus, has announced the implementation of BillRun Billing, an open source billing system designed specifically for the Telecom industry.

MTN Cyprus offers integrated telecommunications solutions for mobile and fixed telephony, broadband and TV, as well as pioneering solutions for private and business clients. With MTN’s private fiber network and the widest 4G network in Cyprus, MTN subscribers enjoy a high level of quality and reliability in their daily communication. BillRun Billing, which is designed for the big data era, offers one of the most scalable solutions in the market, combining the latest technologies and tools with an easy to use interface, all provided by a company with vast Telecom knowledge and support from experienced developers.

Monaco Telecom, the owners of MTN Cyprus, had previously initiated an "Open IT" approach to enable the use of high quality, scalable software, while at the same time reduce software costs and avoid vendor lock-in. MTN Cyprus followed their lead and decided to implement an open source billing system to replace an existing postpaid system. The new open source software for telecoms would help keep OPEX low, while eliminating CAPEX — a practical solution for reducing the risk of over-investing during marketplace uncertainty.

MTN Cyprus found the perfect match with BillRun Technologies, an Israel-based open source software provider of Business Support Systems (BSS), developed specifically for Telecoms in the big data era. BillRun Billing is an open source billing system and is far less complex than traditional systems. It provides operators with the ability to manage all subscribers on a single billing platform, rather than on multiple platforms.

Mr. Thanos Chronopoulos, CEO of MTN Cyprus, commented: “We sought to find an enterprise-ready and scalable open source solution for MTN. BillRun offered us exactly what we were looking for. The BillRun solution is certainly one of the best open source billing systems designed for Telecoms and we are confident that they will provide us with a high level of service.” BillRun’s offering not only included an efficient and cost-effective billing platform, but also provided convergence billing for mobile, fixed and IPTV including roaming and wholesale billing as well as support for all items from the prepaid product catalog.

Ofer Cohen, CEO of BillRun said, “With the emergence of new telecom services and technologies, the need for a flexible, scalable and elastic billing system is key to their success. We are proud to have developed a unified billing solution for retail, interconnect and roaming with an integrated CRM. We are looking forward to working with MTN Cyprus to provide these benefits.” BillRun also offers additional solutions such as BillRun Cloud, a SaaS implementation of BillRun, designed for small and medium businesses.

MTN Cyprus launched its commercial operations in Cyprus in July 2004 – after having won the auction for the second mobile license – and quickly became one of the leading operators in Cyprus. Over the past 5 years, the Company grew its mobile market share by 7 percentage points and it posted Revenues of EUR 123 million in 2017. In September 2018, MTN Cyprus was acquired by Monaco Telecom, the incumbent operator of the Principality of Monaco,
